This week in Miss Reschke’s classroom was very exciting. On Wednesday we went to the funeral of Peg Foley. On Friday we went to the Oktoberfest pep rally. Rootbeer and pretzels for everyone. And were all excited for Oktoberfest.< xml="true" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" prefix="o" namespace="">

This week in 5th grade we learned 12 new vocab words.  In reading and writing we learned about our 5 senses, we also played homeworkopoly.  The second graders got lockers.  We read, "The Three Questions."  We finished our science narrative about our space adventures using facts from the text.

This week in...

Math

We are beginning our study of number patterns and algebra!  We will be covering problem solving using a 4 step method: explore, plan, solve, examine. Moving  on after problem solving, we'll cover divisiblity rules, prime factorization, number patterns, and the first introduction to algebra.

Science

The topic of the week is The Earth and its Neighbors.  We have studied the differences between Earth and other planets, gravity, inertia, constellations, and the layers of the earth.   We started of the chapter by using a strategy called "T.H.I.E.V.E.S" (We look at the Title, Heading, Introduction, Each first sentence, Visuals, End of chapter questions, and the Summary.) This strategy is a great pre-reading tool for any subject that we will be using quite often in room 200.  It is "stealing" information from the text without reading, making reading much easier and quicker!  We are learning about these topics through creating crosswords to help with vocabulary, chapter trees to emphasize the main idea of the chapter, and of course, varied ways of reading the text, including partner reading and popcorn reading.

Language Arts

In language arts, we are currently doing many exercises so I can diagnose their readiness for the next parts of the chapter.
